Houses in the Annex: Real Estate with History

Profile

The Annex, is one of Toronto's more sought after downtown neighbourhoods. It is mainly residential with mature tree-lined streets, and a good mix of commercial and residential real estate. Annex homes boast Victorian and Edwardian styles, with most of them built between the late 1880's and the early 1900s. The area contains many examples of uniquely Toronto-style houses, popular among the city's elite in the late nineteenth century. These houses typically feature large rounded Romanesque arches along with Queen Anne style decorative elements such as turrets. The houses are most often made of brick, though some also incorporate Credit Valley Sandstone. Originally built for many of the city's wealthiest citizens the houses are large, but as the neighbourhood demographic changed many of the houses have been preserved but now are subdivided into apartments and multi unit dwellings.

Entertainment

A pedestrian-friendly, bohemian neighbourhood, the Annex is home to a plethora of different restaurants, bars, clubs, cafes and shops. It has also been home to the likes of Margaret Atwood, Adrian Clarkson, David Suzuki, and members of the rock band Sloan. Annex real estate agents, and one of Partnership founders, Penny Brown is a resident of the area.

Transit

The Annex is served by the TTC Bloor/Danforth subway line through the St George, Spadina and Bathurst subway stations, as well as the Spadina streetcar line, the Bathurst streetcar line and the Dupont bus route. The TTC is one of the main reasons for its pedestrian-friendly environment, just ask our Annex realtors.
